The Giraffe Award at Peninsula Care has been running now for a number of years and is a great achievement and title to achieve. It was designed to be awarded to someone who is seen to be going “head & shoulders” above the rest in their daily working practice.

The Organisation uses a variety of sources to assist in the selection of a “Giraffe” each quarter. Information and feedback come from service users, their families, customers, peers, supervisory and our office staff.

In this quarter we have awarded the following the title of a Peninsula Care”Giraffe”.

Jacinta (RN) – A dedicated nurse who provides specialist care to her patients. We have had numerous compliments about her management of specialist care and the skills and communication skills she demonstrates at work.

Brenda (HCA)- One of our very experienced carers whom shows great loyalty to the organisation and a great work ethic for our customers she works with. Brenda’s current block booking have provided some very complimentary comments about her work and the care she gives to the residents in their home.

Lauren (CCW)- A Community Care Worker who has had a great attendance record to date and is always keen to help a colleague when she can. She is great at working with her service users and they are always keen to tell our office staff how great she is and that they are always happy to see her come through their door.

We are approaching the final weeks before this years annual Heart of Peninsula Care Awards being hosted by UTV’s Pamela Ballantine in the Marine Court Hotel on November 2^nd.

Director of the multi award winning Peninsula Care Services, Jonny Cook, launched the fourth
annual ‘Heart of Peninsula Care Awards’ earlier this week. The awards, in association with The
Newtownards Chronicle, takes place at The Marine Court in Bangor in November.

These prestigious awards aim to reward and recognise the company’s most talented, dedicated and loyal
staff and indeed external healthcare workers who showcase excellence in day-to-day patient care.

Jonny Cook set up in Peninsula in 2009 and now boasts a head office and Training Academy in
Newtownards, as well as a satellite branch in Belfast. Jonny is excited about the forthcoming awards
ceremony. He says;

“Peninsula Care Services wouldn’t be the multi award winning domiciliary care and nursing recruitment
company in Northern Ireland if it wasn’t for my 200 strong staff, many of whom have worked with me
since the conception of the company seven years ago.

My staff go beyond their own call of duty and I want to acknowledge and reward these ordinary people
who make extraordinary differences to our clients’ lives, by treating them to yet another glitzy awards
ceremony. We’re also delighted to recognise others in the industry who show the same passion and ethos,
as caring is everything to us.

Award categories include Peninsula’s Unsung Hero, Newcomer of the Year, Learner of the Year, Client
Choice Award, The Outstanding Achievement Award and also The ‘Giraffe Award’, which as Jonny
explains recognises the person who is head and shoulders above the rest!

Pictured with Jonny is Kimberley Stewart who has won an award for the last two years. Last November
she picked up “Learner of the Year” following completion of her QCF Level 3 Qualification which then
seen her taking up a more senior role within the company.

Organiser Donna Hosking commented, “I am extremely pleased to have teamed up with Jonny and the
team at Peninsula Care to recognise and reward best practice at this years Event.”

This year Peninsula Care are also involving more of our valued healthcare clients by introducing new categories including Care Home Nurse of the Year, Innovation in Clinical Excellence and the Supporting People Award.

However, the most sought after award of the evening will be, as ever, will be the Overall Heart of
Peninsula Care.

The event was hosted by UTV’s Jullian Simmons, and featured live music from the band ‘Signature’. We were also entertained by the talents of Rodd Hogg, a close up Magician, and Brian Moore the DJ who kept the music going until the small hours. Evelyn is back working for the Peninsula Care following a career break to look after her elderly mother who suffered from a number of health complaints.

Evelyn works for both the Healthcare Agency and the Community division and is a big hit with service users. Evelyn had been nominated by a Day Centre for adults with a learning disability that she has been block booked by.
Her nomination said about how she fits in and is like a permanent member of staff and is how the day centre would be at a loss without her.

Evelyn enjoys her work there and really does feel like “part of the furniture” but she enjoys activities etc with her service users.
Evelyn is a reliable and dependable member of staff and a great ambassador for Peninsula Care and very deserving of this award title.

Each few weeks she would visit office staff with her doctors sick line and ask about each of her service users and enjoyed catching up with office and management staff.

A few months ago a smiling Maria came in to the office to tell Director Jonny Cook that her GP had informed her she could return to work so she immediately wanted to tell us.
Maria has now returned to work and it is like she has never been away. Service users are very fond of her and enjoy seeing her each morning she is on duty.

Maria is extremely committed to providing great to her service users whilst being a loyal and reliable employee and a definite Unsung Hero for the organisation. Maria can be seen pictured receiving her award from Deputy Mayor of Ards & North Down, Alderman Bill Keery.

Her managers say she is flexible and provides a great level of care to all she comes across. Keen to help in a variety of geographical areas she is very deserving of this Award.

Simon has been with the company for a number of years now. His managers and clients he works with say he is consistent. Simon has worked in a number of block bookings with our clients as he is always well suited to support those with a learning disability.

Joan Ferguson, Registered Nurse

Joan having been with the company for just under a year has proved a big hit with any nursing home she is placed in. She has helped in covering shift a bit further from home to help out the Agency.

Being shortlisted as finalist for two categories in The Business Eye Small Business Awards 2016, members of the Peninsula management and care team walked the red carpet at La Mon Hotel and Country Club to be greeted with a Champagne reception before entering the ballroom for what became a truly fantastic evening of glitz, glamour, nerves and excitement.

After a delicious meal the awards ceremony hosted by UTV’s Marc Mallet and as he worked his way through the order of ceremony the Peninsula Care table sat in anticipation.

After hearing the list of finalists we heard the Award Sponsor call out the winner to be Peninsula Care as Healthcare Business of the Year.

After lifting the trophy and a few interviews Jonny, Doreen and Rosemary made their way back to the table to await the company’s fate in the second category Peninsula Care were finalist in.

As the finalists were named we then learned that Peninsula Care was to lift the title of being “Highly Commended” in the Customer Focus Category. Jonny was joined on stage by Community Care Workers Melissa Shaw and Chloe Stevenson to receive this amazing title.

Director Jonny Cook says ” Quite often in healthcare we spend so much time thinking about those we care for and as healthcare workers we don’t always get or give ourselves praise and recognition for what we do every day. Trophies and Awards are great to look at but the overwhelming feeling of pride that comes from hearing Peninsula Care being named a winner is priceless. I have known from day one back in 2009 that my team are all winners in the work they do, however it is great to get the recognition for each and every one of them”.

Peninsula Care remain a multi award winning agency now to work for and as well as being on the lookout for a trophy cabinet for our reception we also want others to join us in the Peninsula journey.

Our Care at Home division submitted an application for consideration by the judging panel and are pleasantly surprised to be confirmed as finalist in the following categories.

Healthcare Business of the Year

A specialist category, aimed at small business enterprises in the healthcare field here in Northern Ireland. This category is open to all business-led healthcare related organisations including opticians, dental practices and enterprises such as care homes for the elderly.

Customer Focus Award

The judging panel will single out the local small business which most effectively brings to life best practice in customer service across all of its operations. The judges will look for clear evidence of customer satisfaction.

Our Director Jonny Cook stated, ” Once again I am shocked to learn we have made it to the final of another awards ceremony. I thought two awards would be our limit but who knows? It is a real honour to make it to the final stages and I have a committed team of management and healthcare staff to get us there. Our Care at Home team work tirelessly to bring about a quality driven care service to those who are vulnerable living at home and it is them that this award is for. ”

The second awards ceremony is set to take place on Thursday 2nd June 2016 in the prestigious surroundings of La Mon Hotel. We at Peninsula Care are very excited now and also wish all other finalists the best of luck on the night.

We at Peninsula Care see our service as sticking out from the rest of our competitors just as any Peninsula does. We decided the best way to give recognition was to introduce the Giraffe Award on a quarterly basis keeping within the theme of being “head and shoulders” above the rest.

Each quarter we award a Giraffe for each of the grades we employ, Nurses, Health Care Assistants and Community Care Worker. Every Giraffe received an Award Certificate, an engraved fob watch and a gift card which can be used in over 200 retailers. Our Giraffes this quarter are: Seamus Ritchie, Deborah Wilson and Rebecca Hatty.

Our Nursing Giraffe is Seamus Ritchie, Seamus has been able to adapt well to different settings during his time with Peninsula and regularly picks up shifts at short notice.

Our Health Care Assistant Giraffe winner is Deborah Wilson, Deborah has been with us for nearly a year and works a lot of hours from week to week and has a flexible work ethic.
